This variety is new to me as of 2023. Everyone raves about them, and they are coveted for their large size, so I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss is about. From what I've read, the Green Mountain variation is more akin to the size of commercial onions, but do not store as well as yellow potato onions. My guess is that they are also not as strong/pungent as the yellow variety.
8/21/24 Update: If I'm being honest, I'm not impressed. I planted 15 in a raised bed and a few became mushy before harvest (and they were planted next to Red Dutch Shallots in the same bed and none of the shallots were mushy). Of the 22 I harvested 22, seven became mushy and unusable while curing. I replanted 10 bulbs to see if they perform better during the 2025 season.
The Green Mountain variety was originated/cultivated by Kelly Winterton around the year 2000 in Utah USA.
