Companion Plants

Companion Plants

Potato onions are amazing companion plants because their smell protects against pests, and their small footprint allows them to be inter-planted wherever there is room. They perform well and produce varying benefits with:

Apples, apricots, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, chamomile, cherries, chili peppers, kohlrabi, leeks lettuce, marigolds, marjoram, parsley, parsnip, peaches, peppers, potatoes, radishes, rosemary, rue, rutabaga, spinach, strawberries, squash, summer savory, swiss chard and tomatoes.

Do not plant potato onions near asparagus, beans, sage or peas.

To be honest, I never think about this (and I grow asparagus, beans and peas). Then again, I rarely inter-plant. Generally, there is a 16" (40 cm) patio block between spaces of vegetables, and that must be sufficient spacing. My potato onions are always planted alone in an individual space separated from the other vegetables by 16".
